Students raising money for cystic fibrosis research

WHAT IS
CYSTIC FIBROSIS?

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. There is currently no cure.

CF affects the body in various ways, but mainly affects the lungs and digestive system. The severity of cystic fibrosis differs from person to person. However, ongoing lung infections lead to destruction of the lungs and loss of lung function which eventually causes death in the many people who live with cystic fibrosis.

Typical complications caused by cystic fibrosis include difficulty in digesting fats and proteins, vitamin deficiencies due to loss of pancreatic enzymes, and progressive loss of lung function.

It is estimated that 1 in every 3,600 children born in Canada has cystic fibrosis. Over 4,200 Canadian children, adolescents, and adults attend specialized CF clinics.
